What Is Alcoholism

How to Stop Drinking Alcohol
Lots of alcoholics know WHY they have to quit the bad habit. What they really do not know is HOW to do it. Perhaps you've made a big legal mess or you have lost another job. It is possible that you were abandoned by both your partner and family due to your actions. Whatever the reason is, its time to take a good look at yourself and finally be convinced to quit drinking alcohol.
If you even suspect you have a problem with alcohol, you possibly do. Its just a matter of doing something about it...which is actually the tough part. many drinkers know in the back of their mind that they have a problem.
It will certainly be a lot easier if alcoholics can just buy Magic Pills to heal themselves. Or perhaps a hypnotist to 'reprogram' your need for liquor. A time machine can also work because you could go back to when you actually started drinking liquor.
But the fact remains that it is a long and hard procedure. First, you have to learn how to live your life without alcohol. Some people will crave for alcohol and this could be a long and painful phase. If you want to succeed then you could use some tools and strategies. Heavy drinkers need help through withdrawal and detox. So before quitting, ask for a physician's suggestion. The pain and discomfort others experience is minimal. Most alcoholics have gone through this a time or two on their own. But the physical cravings can last for years. You will not succeed if you don't learn to live a life without alcohol. For every one thousand alcoholics, only one stays sober for at least 2 years. The odds are dismal but there is a way to be that 1.
People usually succeed if they follow a methodical process to quit drinking liquor.
Admitting that you should quit drinking alcohol is the very first step.
It could help if you write down all of the reasons you could think of to quit drinking alcohol. Write down every reason you could think of. Be sure and include anyone you hurt, how embarrassed you are, and any damage you have done. Put this paper in a safe place so that you can read it when you need to expel any hesitation that your have to give up drinking liquor.
It could also help if you think about the money you spend each time you drink liquor - buying it, going to clubs, the legal fees and income loss. Do the math when you check your credit card statements and budget. Alcohol abuse is detrimental in lots of aspects - mentally, physically and financially.
This type of honest introspection is something you will need to get used to in order to come to terms with your life and recover fully. You would realize when you are ready and committed to quit drinking liquor.
Ask for Advice from a Doctor
Only a doctor could evaluate how much damage is done when it comes to your body. A doctor could also give advice on how to quit drinking. There are two choices - do it by yourself or be medically supervised in a hospital.
Tell People (who understand)
Telling people you trust that you will quit drinking alcohol could also help because they would understand and help you. If you need help, these people will be there for you.
It is Essential to Attend Meetings
If you would like to be with people who have experienced what you're experiencing then the 12 Step Meetings is the place to go to. There is sure to be 12 Step Meetings where you live so try to find them. Different kinds of meetings for various types of people with different kinds of problems. If you can not go to 90 meetings within 90 days then just try to go to as many meetings as you can. These meetings would give you all the information you need on how to quit drinking liquor.
If you have reached this point then that is something to be very proud of. Now its time to start a new life...one that doesn't involve drinking alcohol.
