How To Properly Teach Youth Basketball

by Jashua Moses

Coaching a basketball team can be rather difficult to manage successfully. The difficulty lies in the fact that the coach walks the line between friend, boss, and mentor. On one hand the coach is a comrade-in-arms working to help the team succeed. On the other hand the coach is the task master that must keep their players focused and working hard. On top of that the coach is often looked to as a mentor and a reliable person for the players to turn to when they are struggling. There is little doubt that coaching a basketball team can be very tough, but there are a few things a new coach should keep in mind to help with the process.

Fast paced drills - fast paced drills are great as they keep the training moving and keep the team interested and fit. This will help them get into better condition while also making the practice more fun. Fitness is vital, and they need to be able to keep up with the pace of the game.

Best players - use players in their best positions and let them practice for this purpose. Never use players in positions that they have shown no ability for. It is also important to assign duties to players based on their strongest abilities. Think about keeping the re-bounders in the right positions and have them practice these drills. The same thing should be done based on defensive qualities.

Cutting - drills that work on basket cuts and back cuts are something that young players need to lean, as well as something that most of them enjoy during a practice session. It instructs them on how to move into a triple threat position after the basketball is caught by a player.

Another thing that new coaches need to realize when they are just starting out is that they will have little success if they are trying to be micro managers. Conditions are always changing on the court and a team that is incapable of naturally adjusting to these conditions will not be successful.

Triple threat - this can be done with a number of players during a training session. It will show players how to get into triple threat positions whenever one players catches the ball. Use the plays and drill listed above as a basketball coach, and you will find the team improving and having fun.
