The Process Of Aluminium Extrusion

by Donald West

The process of creating objects of a fixed cross-sectional profile is known as extrusion. Therefore, the process of transforming the alloys into definitive cross-sectional objects is known as aluminium extrusion. The element is one of the most abundant elements making up to eight percent of crust. It is a soft, light, ductile, and malleable metal. It also possesses a silvery appearance in addition to being non-magnetic. Due to its lightweight nature it is easily cast, machined, drawn, and extruded.

As earlier mentioned, the extrusion process is quite complex as it involves a series of procedures. The first step involves the design of shape of the die. One the desired shape has been created, an alloy of cylindrical shape is heated at temperatures of about 800F-925F. After this has been done, it may be then transferred onto a loader. A lubricant is then applied so as to avoid sticking onto the extrusion machine.

The next step involves the application of tremendous pressure onto a dummy block. This pressure is responsible for forcing the element into the die. When this element comes into contact with oxygen it tends to form oxides. In order to prevent this, nitrogen either in gaseous or liquid form is passed through sections of a die.

A run-out table allows the extruded material to pass through as a piece that is now the same shape as the die. Cooling fans then cool the metal extrusion created. Once this process is complete, it may be moved to a stretcher where it might be straightened and hardened. They are then placed on the saw table where they are carefully cut into the desired lengths.

The final step involves the application of heat. Using heat treatments, the extrusions are brought into age ovens where hardening takes place. Depending on the colors or texture needed, adjustments can be performed here so as to get the desired finish. The process is widely used because this way various shapes and sizes of aluminium can be obtained.

This process has witnessed quite a number of changes most especially concerning growth and development. A series of new methods are being put into use so as to make the process more effective. The metal in itself is applied in many areas. Many items are made using the metal. These items may include household products like utensils, packaging containers, foils, watches, streetlight poles, and other numerous products.

It can be most preferred in the manufacturing industry because it has a low density and is also able to resist corrosion. Another great feature is that it does not ignite easily. For these reasons, many industries such as the transportation industry, aerospace as well as construction industries make use of this metal. In addition, it may also be used in the fabrication process of superconducting qubits due to its ability to conduct both thermal and electrical charges.

The metal is also preferred to make gadgets such as smartphones and tablets because it is highly durable and has a sleek classy appearance; thus, a remarkable element in the universe.
