Pertinent Information Regarding New York Propane

by Cath Buhr

Liquefied petroleum gas, better known as propane, is becoming more and more popular as the years go by. While propane once seemed to be a more likely fuel source for people in very rural areas, these days you see propane tanks popping up in yards all over the country. In fact, at least 4 million households in New York use propane and there are plenty of good reasons to make the switch.

It might surprise you to learn that New York propane is actually a very clean fuel. While coal and other fuels are listed as greenhouse gases, and even natural gas can be harmful to the environment if it leaks, propane is clean and green. When you switch to New York propane, you will be helping the environment, which is always a good idea. For some people, this will be one of the main reasons why they decide to use propane, as they truly appreciated the environmental factor.

While being green is always a smart move, there are other reasons why propane is advisable as a fuel source. For one thing, if you plan it right, propane is highly affordable. Many companies allow you to pre-buy propane in bulk and if you do so during months such as July and August, when New York propane prices tend to be low, you can really enjoy a great deal of savings off your yearly energy bill. Also, keep in mind, that with propane, your fuel source is not dependent on what is going on with the grid. In fact, you can use propane to run more than your heater. You can use it to provide power for your stove & oven, washer & dryer, dishwasher, water heater and much more.

One of the initial things that one must do when moving from their old source of fuel to New York propane is think about propane tanks. First, contact a propane delivery service and have them come out and check out your yard to determine where a tank will fit and what size might be right for you. Additionally, this is a good time to ask about New York propane prices and how often you will need to refill the tank.

New York propane tanks come in many different sizes. Typically the sizes that work best for a private home would be the 250-gallon propane tank, the 320-gallon tank, the 500-gallon tank and the 1,000-gallon tank. With the 1,000-gallon tank, you definitely will need to have a larger yard, as these tanks measure 16' long with a 41" diameter. The 320-gallon and 500-gallon tanks are both 10' long and the 250-gallon tanks are only about 7.5 feet long.

However, it is not just the size of your yard that is important. You also must consider access, after all the delivery person will need to access your tank several times during the course of the year to deliver your New York propane. If you wish to have fewer refills, a larger tank might be your best bet, especially if you have a larger home with four or more residents and a variety of appliances that will be using this propane.
