Cleaning Your Car's Upholstery

by Cornelius Nunev

Your vehicle's upholstery will become dirty by everyday dirt, food, smoke, sweat and other liquids, sprays, powders and salves. Constant exposure to the blazing sun only makes things worse. Here's how to clean your vehicle's upholstery so that you will not be humiliated for your date to see just how terrible you are when you're cruising by yourself.

Driving only please

The simplest way to help keep your vehicle clean is to not juggle food, drinks, reading materials, telephones, grooming appliances, makeup and toys. Pay attention to the road and keep both hands on the wheel. If you need to break into your stash of distractions, pull over so that you can devote your full attention.

Maintain through cleaning

Just like you regularly vacuum your home, you need to regularly vacuum your vehicle. Vacuum underneath all the mats and on top of them if they need it. Use the different parts to make sure you get all the nooks and crannies. This day-to-day maintenance is very important. It makes it harder for grime to set in when the upholstery fibers are upright, which takes place whenever you vacuum.

You can shield your vehicle with stain repellents such as Scotchguard. Even if you think it is a little bit costly, it is worth it in the end.

Keeping the leather clean

You will only need leather cleaner for your car if you get a deep set stain from something such as ink or nail polish. The cleaner and a soft sponge can get it out. Always keep away from products that are not intended for leather though. One thing to always remember is that leather cleaner is not necessary for regular maintenance. A damp towel works well, specifically since leather is generally water resistant already. Just clean up messes quickly, and you also will not have any issues.

Get every little thing else cleaned

When taking care of rubber and vinyl upholstery surfaces, you may want to invest in interior protectant since both get damaged in the sun very easily. You may want specialty cleaners also. When you have some baking soda around, you can put it on a damp rag to clean vinyl. Do not forget to rinse with dishwashing detergent and water after that though. It is a homemade remedy to help.

Several extras

Use cool water to dilute coffee spills. Soak in glass cleaner and blot dry after 5 minutes if the stain does not go away

Clean greasy stains with paint thinner (test in a discrete area of carpet first) and salt or cornmeal. Let it sit overnight, then vacuum the area

Use hairspray or salt on pen ink stains in carpeting

Getting rid of vomit does not have to be difficult. Just put club soda or baking soda on it to dilute the acids in it

Mix laundry starch and cold water to cover blood. After letting it dry, you can vacuum it away

Dilute alcohol spills with cold water

When brightening fading carpet, all you need is a mixture of half-cup of ammonia and one pint of water. This only works if you do not have wool carpet. Just sponge the carpet with the mixture after vacuuming

When you have smelly carpet, you can use Borax. Let it sit for an hour and vacuum it up. Do this over again if you would like to get rid of flea eggs and fleas

Spray the carpet with a mixture of five parts water and one part liquid fabric softener. This will get rid of static

Hate carpet imprints? Put a damp towel over the spot, and press with an iron set to low heat. Don't let the iron sit, as synthetic fibers can melt

Want your car mats to look good? Just use liquid shoe wax polish
