Common Conditions Causing Sciatica

by Jerome Hoffman

Back Pain will affect to 80% of ALL Americans at some point in their lives. If you are one of the many individuals who suffer from chronic back pain, there are many options for treatment based on what your condition might be. One of the most-common conditions that spine specialists see is called 'Sciatic nerve pain', or simply 'sciatica'. Although not a condition itself, sciatica is the symptom of another medical condition.

Piriformis Syndrome leading to Sciatic Nerve Pain: Piriformis syndrome is named for the piriformis muscle and the pain caused when the muscle irritates the sciatic nerve. The piriformis muscle is located in the lower part of the spine, connects to the thighbone, and assists in hip rotation. Piriformis syndrome develops when muscle spasms develop in the piriformis muscle thereby compressing the sciatic nerve which runs just below the piriformis muscle.

Herniated Discs and Sciatic Nerve Pain A herniated disc occurs when the nucleus breaks through the annulus fibrosus. When a disc herniates, disc material can press against an adjacent nerve root and compress delicate nerve tissue and cause sciatic nerve pain. The consequences of a herniated disc are worse than a contained-disc condition like a bulging disc. Not only does the herniated disc cause direct compression of the nerve root against the interior of the bony spinal canal, but the disc material itself also contains an acidic, chemical irritant that causes nerve inflammation. In both cases, nerve compression and irritation cause inflammation and pain, often leading to Sciatica symptoms such as pain, numbness and weakness in the lower extremities.

The Sciatic Nerve The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in the body. It originates in the sacral plexus as a network of nerves in the lower back (lumbosacral spine) and measures three-quarters of an inch in diameter. The lumbosacral spine refers to the lumbar spine and the sacrum combined. The sciatic nerve and its nerve branches enable movement and feeling (motor and sensory functions) in the thigh, knee, calf, ankle, foot, and toes.

If you think you have sciatica, call your doctor. The first step toward relieving pain is a proper diagnosis. If you are experiencingBack Pain in Denver, call the Denver area's leader in Spine-Related conditions and treatment, SpineOne.
