Understanding The Peer Tutoring Training

by Jocelyn Davidson

Tutoring involves helping a student to further understand their studies. It is important as it helps them record amazing grades. This could be in the case where your previous performance in the past semester was not good enough. This type of training involves working with a fellow student. Peer tutoring training is a step anyone who wants to tutor should first go through.

It is important to know that tutors are not reading teachers. They are simply reading helpers. They motivate struggling students to practice reading skills previously taught in classroom setups. Before they go out to the field, their trainers should ensure that they have mastered the necessary skills. They should also be given opportunities to practice and demonstrate the skills mastered.

Fun is an essential part of study. That is why a tutor should have fun study methods. This helps to ensure learning is memorable. Examples include putting students in groups in the case of activities that need cooperation. Role play can also be used. These methods enable students to express what they have learnt. Supervisors should check on the sessions once in a while.

You may end up in a session where you have to work with someone who is disabled. It is not that difficult. You just have to know what disability you could be dealing with. Also, remember that disability is never inability. Treat such a person normally and not like a kid. This is the only way to enable them to relate well with you.

During training, they are taught to remember that they are peers and not professors. They should not act all so authoritative. The objectives of the students should be put into consideration. One should also look out for other problem areas that could come up. The tutor should not take too much control of the session as this may not help the student.

Assessment is a good skill one has to have. This involves looking and finding out if the student has made any progress. A good way of doing this is by asking questions. When your student makes a mistake try and correct them in a good way so as not to crush their confidence. This gives them morale to work harder and avoid a repeat of the same problem.

Start a session well by saying hi to whoever you will be working with. It is a gateway towards you being friendly with each other. Find out the weak and strong points of the students. The strong points could be a way of working towards your weaker points. Motivate your students by praising them when they do well.

The person you let out to the field should be trained on behavioral expectations, the use of praise and academic intervention strategies. Try and perfect them so that they may go out and perfect others. Tutoring has been proven to be an effective method of study. Many students have confirmed its benefit and advice others who want to improve their grades to try it out. Do not miss out give it a try.
